QUAN: New iPad-Controlled Robots May Help Kids With Autism
Because children with autism are sometimes more likely to communicate with a non-human entity, Popchilla can serve as a bridge between autistic kids and the outside world.
HOUSTON--As emerging robotics company Quantum International Corp. (OTCBB: QUAN) continues to seek out promising innovations for commercialization, the company believes that new robots controlled using the Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPad represent a major leap forward in improving the ways that children with autism learn and communicate.
Robotics company Interbots has teamed up with the Autism Center of Pittsburgh to create Popchilla, a plush, cuddly robot designed to help provide therapy for autistic kids. Because children with autism are sometimes more likely to communicate with a non-human entity, Popchilla can serve as a bridge between autistic kids and the outside world.
In the first phase of the therapy program, trained therapists use an iPad app to control Popchilla's movements and interact with an autistic child. Eventually, the therapists will turn over the robot's iPad controls to the child and encourage him or her to use Popchilla to identify and express emotions to others, potentially reducing behavioral frustrations.
"We've already been amazed by the incredible evolution in robotics made possible by tablet technology, but Popchilla is one of the most innovative ideas we've seen yet," said Quantum CEO Robert Federowicz. "This is exactly the sort of robotics breakthrough that we're interested in helping to develop and deliver."
Quantum is already pursuing potentially lucrative new robotics targets around the globe. The company recently signed a letter of intent and began due diligence toward a definitive agreement with the Industrial Research Institute for Automation and Measurements (PIAP) in Warsaw, Poland. The company is focused on aggressive growth as it competes alongside robotics companies including Honda Motor Co., Ltd. (NYSE: HMC), AeroVironment, Inc. (NASDAQ: AVAV) and Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ: ISRG).
