BVS PRESENT ON PREVIEW BINOBOT, THEIR ROBOT WITH BIO-INSPIRED BINOCULAR VISION, AT INNOROBO

French firm BVS (Brain Vision Systems) design and manufacture bio-inspired vision systems similar to Human brain perception that can be used on many applications in the field of robotics vision. They will show at Innorobo their latest prototype, the Binobot robot with binocular vision.

The Binobot robot integrates one of the bio-inspired perception systems (BIPS) of BVS, the BIPcam, which features similar skills as a Human brain: perception, understanding, and action command. BIPcam allows Binobot to react in real-time to colors, movements and objects structure.

Binobot has a large binocular vision identical to the Human vision range. Each eye is linked to a BIPcam detecting luminosity, saturation and color hue. The latter incorporates a high sensibility VGA sensor in order to reach a good image quality in low light density environments. The robot reacts instantaneously to the speed and direction of a mobile object: he tracks its movement, follows it and anticipates its trajectory.
Binobot is very interactive and has a large action range thanks to its capabilities to analyze its own vision with the embedded video sensors of the BIPcam and to actuate depending on its perception. He is able to recognize and track geometrical-shaped objects such as a red-colored ball. Binobot also perceives the objects structure: curves and oriented edges. He can measure the interest of its interlocutor by capturing the curve of its mouth and he will determine whether he smiles or pulls a face at him.
The BIPcam has advantageous features: it takes very little space, has a low weight and can easily be incorporated as an embedded system in any kind of robots or other vision and control applications in the fields of services robotics.
BIPcam is linked to the robot with Ethernet and USB.2 ports or with a CAN interface to enable a high speed rate. It has its own RAM (64KB) and flash memory (512KB) so that the computer power isn't busy, contrary to other systems that need to implement complex algorithms slowing down the processing. As a result, its energy consumption is very low: only 2.5 watts. The system is independent thanks to its integrated ARM cortexTM M3 microprocessor (72MHz), and its versatile CPU system is favorable to the use of other computing programs.
BIPcam has a sturdy constitution and its time of use is optimum thanks to the quality of its components. The product was designed by the R&D laboratory team of BVS in Paris and was assembled in France, an additional guarantee of quality.
